Project
History:
The Jefferson Clinton Hotel, as it was originally named, was built
in 1927. It is located in downtown Syracuse within historic Armory
Square, a residential and commercial neighborhood. The propertys
life as a hotel lasted until 1989 when the building fell into disrepair
and had to close its doors. The City of Syracuse took control of
the property, and for several years, was unsuccessful in securing
a developer. Washington St. Partners, in conjunction with several
partners including Brandy, Wein & Busch Hospitality, saw the untapped
potential in the historic building, and acquired the property.
Challenge:
Due
to the historical nature of the building, careful consideration
had to be given in maintaining and preserving many of the building's
original architectural accents including a marble-paneled lobby.
Solution:
Washington St. Partners, taking advantage of its location within
both Federal and State economic development zones, was able to meet
the historical renovation requirements and in June 2001, the Jefferson
Clinton Hotel was distinctively transformed into Syracuse's premier
downtown hotel, Hawthorn Suites Ltd. The Hotel is currently surpassing
its occupancy goals, frequently reaching full capacity. Its success
is an economic benefit to Armory Square, as it welcomes to the area
thousands of new travelers and tourists each year.
